British Asparagus Festival Seeks Deserving Recipient Of Asparagus Round On St George’s Day?

The Queen, Fortnum & Mason, and the House of Lords are amongst the great and the good who’ve previously received the first-cut round of 100 British Asparagus spears to mark the start of the British Asparagus Season on April 23rd.

This year, the British Asparagus Festival – http://www.britishasparagusfestival.co.uk – has decided to ask the folks of England who they think should be presented with the round this Saint George’s Day, complete with a visit from Gus the Asparagus Man, Jemima the Asparamancer and Saint George himself? Is there someone celebrating their 100th birthday on that day? Or a couple getting married who deserve a special treat? Perhaps a charity is holding an event and would like to auction the asparagus for their cause.

The organisers want to hear from you. Just tweet your idea to ‪either @twowitwowoo or @AsparagusFest‪ with the hashtag #myasparagus or email Angela.Tidmarsh@wychavon.gov.uk

The festival kicks off on Saint George’s Day with the Great British Asparagus Run and is a celebration of the first-cut round of asparagus. The British Asparagus Festival has earnt a reputation for being one of the UK’s quirkiest and most eccentric festivals, thanks to the likes of the asparamancer, the asparafairy and lots of other strange goings on.

As usual, the Run begins at the National Trust’s only pub – the 600-year-old Fleece Inn in Bretforton. This year however, the main festivities will take place next to Evesham Abbey Bell Tower to celebrate its recent restoration. The newly-renovated bells will ring out for the first time to welcome the Great British Asparagus Run.

Also joining the morning’s celebrations will be world-renowned asparamancer, Jemima Packington, Eve the Asparafairy, troupes of Morris dancers, including the all-female Molly Dancers, together with The Archer’s Eddie Grundy who will be reading odes to the vegetable.

The newly-harvested spears will then be escorted by a fleet of vintage and Morgan Cars to the winning destination.
